FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS

Night at the Races

On 6th March we held a race night at the SUFC Platinum Suite.  This event was a new one for us and certainly proved to be great fun.  The evening raised a fantastic £500 – so a special thanks goes to all those who bet and lost!

Fashion Show

We were then back at the Platinum Suite on March 30th for a very special fashion show.  As many of you know the event was held in memory of Ann Drummond (Sue’s sister) and all the clothes were donated by her family.  As well as the fashion show we also had the ‘10 years younger’ makeover of Maureen Booth who is a volunteer in the centre on a Wednesday.  Now Maureen always looks lovely, but after the makeover she looked amazing and really did look 10 years younger.

The evening, which was kindly hosted by Paulette Edwards from BBC Radio Sheffield was attended by over 250 people, making it the largest fundraising event organised by SRSB, and as if that wasn’t amazing enough we also raised over £5,000.  We have since had some fantastic comments including:-

‘What a fantastic night it was, you must have worked so hard to pull it off but my goodness it was worth it,’

So we would just like to say a big thank you to all that attended and also to everyone who helped on the evening – we couldn’t have done it without you.

Following on from the evening, we decided to bring the remainder of the clothes to the centre for the clients, volunteers and staff to purchase.  This too was a great success as many people brought their families and friends to see the clothes as well, and it didn’t stop there as the following week the items that were left were taken to Cairn Home for their yard sale.

This took the total raised to over £7000 which will fully equip the Health and Beauty room in our new Mappin Street Centre.

Abseil

We had our first abseil of the year at the SWFC Ground, Hillsborough on the 5th April and although we didn’t have many people taking part, those who did really enjoyed it, and luckily weren’t afraid of heights

St George’s Day

Thursday 23rd April saw the centre transformed into a sea of red and white (shocking, says Owl’s fan Sue) as we celebrated St Georges Day in style.  With traditional locally produced sausages and mash on the menu and songs such as Land of Hope and Glory filling the room a great time was had by all.

Sheffield Marathon

SRSB was again chosen to be one of the beneficiaries of the Sheffield Half Marathon and Fun Run.  The day started early (a little too early some might say!) for the volunteers that were there but the atmosphere at Don Valley Stadium made it all worthwhile.  We had over 20 people running the half marathon and 30 people including a group of visually impaired young people from Actionnaires doing the Fun Run for SRSB.  For once the sun was shining and the day went so quickly and before we knew it the day was over.  We would just like to say thank you to all the staff and volunteers who helped on the day and not forgetting Rob Coggin (Sue’s husband) who drove the clock car - who says that people from SRSB don’t get everywhere!

Bowlathon

A new star was born at our Bowlathon at Handsworth on Thursday 30th April which saw Sue Barrett scoring a fantastic 166 including 5 strikes!  Well done Sue, we all had a fun evening and look forward to the next one.

Go Dotty Day

Minnie Mouse and superhero Flash were among the visitors to our centre on Go Dotty day 1st May, as staff and volunteers wore fancy dress and dots for the day.  The whole week was full of fun events with chair aerobics, line dancing and smartie buns.

The week was organised to celebrate the bi-centenary of the birth of Louis Braille.  He invented the form of communication known as Braille used by blind and partially sighted people.

Our Creative Writing Group did some fantastic work on Braille and its benefits to them.  Southey Green Primary school joined in the celebrations for the day and a number of their pupils joined us at the centre.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

SRSB Goes to the Dogs, Owlerton Stadium, Tuesday 19th May

Join us for this exciting evening at Owlerton Stadium, Hillsborough which is sure to be lots of fun.  You have the opportunity to sponsor a race or a dog so why not come along and ‘try your luck to win a buck!’

The first race is at 7.30pm and

tickets are £2.00 & include a free race card.

Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge, Saturday 13th June

This would be a great event for all you experienced walkers who fancy climbing the 3 highest peaks in Yorkshire (Penyghent, Whernside and Ingleborough).  The challenge covers approximately 25 miles and experienced instructors will support you all the way.

Minimum sponsorship is £50.

St Mary’s Church Abseil, Saturday 27th June

At 40 metres, St Mary’s Church provides one of the biggest abseils currently available in the city.  The climb up the spiral stone staircases offer the initial challenge before you reach the top of the tower and see the fantastic views of the city.  So why not join Eric Cooper (a young client at 84) in this exciting way to raise funds for SRSB.  Coincidentally he was christened there many years ago!

Minimum sponsorship is £50.

Baitings Dam Abseil & Zip Wire, Sunday 28th June

Just when you thought you had got out of the previous abseil, here’s another one!

Located near Halifax, this impressive venue provides a 60m abseil and a 200m zip slide from the Dam wall into the valley below.  Ann Allen volunteer did the abseil last year and said “it was such a happy friendly atmosphere” and “would do it again this year”, despite the bad weather.  If you’re feeling really brave you could always do both the abseil and the zip!

Minimum sponsorship is £50 for each event and transport is available.

Sponsored Dog Walk, Graves Park, Sunday 23rd August

This new event for SRSB sees us joining with the RSPCA for a relaxing walk in the park.  The walk starts at 11 am at the Rose Cottage and goes all through the park.  This event is open to everyone, even those who don’t have a dog - it’s a great opportunity for a family day out and you could even bring a picnic for afterwards.

SRSB Charity Golf Day, Hillsborough Golf Club, Monday 28th September

Following the success of our golf day last year we have decided to hold another one, this time at Hillsborough Golf Club.  We have kept both the format and the cost of the day, which is £140 per team of 4 at the same price as last year, so if you are a keen golfer and play on a regular basis why not come and join us for a game on this fantastic course.

Minimum Sponsorship

When organising events such as an abseil or zip wire we are charged for each participant.  Therefore we have to set a minimum sponsorship to cover our costs and raise some funds for SRSB.  We are lower than any other charity as our aim is to give as many people as possible the opportunity to feel the buzz and take part in the events.

Other Ways to help us

Store Collections

So far this year our store collections have raised over £1,000 so a big thankyou to everyone who takes part in them.  We continue to hold store collections to raise much needed funds and awareness of SRSB, so if you can spare a few hours to help collect on any of the following dates then please contact Sue.

Friday 22nd May at Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre.

Saturday 20th June at Waitrose, Ecclesall Road.

Thursday 9th, Friday 10th, Saturday 11th July at Morrison’s, Meadowhead.

Thursday 10th, Friday 11th, Saturday 12th September at Morrison’s, Hillsborough

Thursday 24th September at Asda, Handsworth

Saturday 26th September at Orchard Square Shopping Centre

Donations In Lieu

This year we have had a couple of clients who have kindly asked for donations to SRSB in lieu of birthday presents.  This is a fantastic and very generous way of donating to SRSB so we would just like to wish them both a belated very ‘Happy Birthday.’

So far we have received over £440 which will go towards equipment for the new building.  So if you’re the person who has everything then when not support us in this special way.

Recycling

Don’t forget that SRSB recycles.  We collect printer cartridges, stamps and mobile phones which all turn into funds for SRSB.

Blue Boxes

Sometimes it’s the smallest things that really do make a difference as in the last year we have had over £5,000 donated from the contents of our blue home collection boxes.

If you would like to give a little blue box a home and stop your loose change from falling down the back of the sofa then please contact the Fundraising office.

For information on any of forthcoming events please contact Sue or Caroline in the fundraising office and if you have any ideas of your own for raising funds then please let us know.  Thank you for your support.
