The Society operates a residential home for elderly blind people, located in the Crosspool area of Sheffield.
The home currently accommodates 28 residents and in addition has 1 room which is reserved for respite care. A project was recently completed to extend the home to provide a further 4 bedrooms and 3 studio flats. The alterations to the home were completed in November 2001 and the Inspections and Registration Unit of Sheffield Social Services inspected and formally registered the home for 30 residents on 7th December 2001. The official opening of the extension was conducted by Lady Scarbrough on Wednesday 22nd May 2002.
The home is managed by Kevin McGrath, plus Assistant Managers Helen Sturgess and Sue Sherwood. All the staff undergo visual awareness training and provide a very high level of care, creating a homely atmosphere. The home is fitted out to a very high standard and we are proud of the inspection reports from the Inspections & Registration Unit of Sheffield City Council, Social Services Department. These reports are available for reading at Cairn Home. Anyone wishing to look around Cairn Home is welcome to call in at any time but it is advisable to telephone in advance to ensure that a member of staff will be available to give a tour of the facilities.

Friends of Cairn Home is a totally independant support group dedicated to supporting the residents of the home. They consist mainly of the relatives of residents or former residents and raise funds with a variety of events throughout the year.
The funds raised are used to provide a variety of services for the residents of the home such as entertainers, keep fit classes, Christmas lunch, Christmas gifts and outings/holidays, all of which are appreciated by the residents and help to keep both their minds and their bodies active. The keep fit classes are part funded by South Yorkshire Community Foundation and in 2001 Friends also received financial support from Westfield Contributory Health Scheme which enabled them to replace the home's minibus. This is a 12 seat fully accessible minibus with a wheelchair lift which allows the residents to take regular trips out.
The SRSB are very supportive of the work undertaken by the "Friends" and are very grateful for all their hard work.
The Friends may be contacted via Cairn Home - Tel: 0114 - 236 1536.
